A computer game publisher has recently released its(89 more words not shown)

Which one of the following,(9 more words not shown)

Reading the argument

Renting the game isn't the same as buying it. Will these extra rentals turn into extra sales?

The publisher has a plausible story. Even casual players become absorbed in finishing the game, and a renter who decides to buy can get a rebate equal to one rental's cost. That makes the rental a relatively attractive first step toward owning the game.

What we’re looking for

Still, sales currently meet expectations while rentals exceed them. To predict that sales will exceed expectations too, we need a reason that the unexpectedly large rental audience will generate purchases. The question asks us to strengthen that connection. I want something that makes renters likely to buy, rather than treating every rental as if it were already a future sale.

Working the answers

  • A

Another place to purchase the game doesn't tell us whether more renters will decide to purchase it. Buyers might use the publisher instead of a retailer without increasing the total number of sales. Availability through another outlet isn't the missing demand connection.

  • B
    Correct

Most players need several weeks, but one rental lasts only two days. Combine that with the desire to finish: renters have a reason to want much longer access. Buying the game, especially with the rental-cost rebate, becomes an attractive option.

They aren't forced to buy; they might rent again or stop playing. But B gives us a concrete reason that many people drawn into the game through rentals could become buyers. That's enough to strengthen the forecast.

  • C

Popularity of the publisher's games in general doesn't establish that this game's sales will rise above the level already expected. A popular publisher could have high expectations to begin with. We need evidence supporting this particular change in the sales forecast.

  • D

This concerns people after they finish the game. It doesn't tell us whether someone who rents it can finish during the rental or will want to buy it. If anything, losing interest after completion could make a short rental sufficient for someone who finishes quickly. D supplies no reason to expect more purchases.

  • E

Giving the game to a friend after finishing it doesn't create another sale. The friend might get access without buying a copy. We need support for renters becoming purchasers, not an account of how an existing purchaser might pass the game along.
