The law of the city of Weston regarding(55 more words not shown)

If all the statements above(11 more words not shown)

Reading the argument

There are several conditions packed into the registration rule. The contribution must exceed $100, the donor must not currently live in Weston, and the donor must not be a former resident either. A former resident who has moved away falls outside this registration requirement, just as a current resident does.

Brimley's campaign accepted contributions only from those two groups: current and former residents. So none of its donors falls into the group the law requires to register a contribution.

What we’re looking for

It is possible to start wondering about additional campaign laws, but this question gives us the city's rule and tells us to take the stated compliance as true. We should reason within that account. We need a consequence of the given rule and the stated donor categories.

Working the answers

  • A

A former resident can be a nonresident now. Someone who moved away could give Brimley's campaign $500 while remaining outside the registration requirement. A rules out that permitted possibility, so it does not follow. The exception depends on the donor's former residency, not merely the amount donated.

  • B

We do not know that any contributions were actually registered. Because all the donors were current or former residents, the campaign could comply without registering anything. B asserts an action the passage does not establish.

  • C
    Correct

None needed to be registered under the stated law. All came from current or former residents, and the requirement applies to nonresidents who are not former residents. The campaign's donors therefore all fall outside the category triggering registration, regardless of how much each donated.

  • D

Voluntary registration could include small contributions too. The campaign might choose to record a $5 gift along with a $500 gift. A rule requiring certain large contributions to be registered does not prohibit registering smaller ones, so we cannot infer the size of everything actually registered.

  • E

Not having to register a contribution does not mean not registering it. The campaign might voluntarily register every contribution for its own recordkeeping or transparency. The passage establishes that registration was unnecessary, not that none took place.
