Reading the argument
If I go on a Wednesday with a scheduled poetry reading, I get half-priced coffee all day. Since Zack's schedules free readings almost every Wednesday, that should cover most Wednesdays.
But Wednesday isn't necessarily the only reading day. The coffeehouse might also schedule readings on Mondays, Tuesdays, or other days. And a reading is one reason for discounted coffee, not necessarily the only reason.
What we’re looking for
For the inference question, keep what we can actually connect: almost every Wednesday has a free reading, and every scheduled reading day has half-priced coffee. So most Wednesdays must have the discount. We don't yet know how Wednesdays compare with the rest of the week, or what happens on a Wednesday without a free reading.
Working the answers
- A
We don't know that Wednesday has the discount more often than other days. Perhaps every Monday has a scheduled reading and discounted coffee, while almost every Wednesday does. Knowing Wednesday's pattern doesn't rank it against days the passage never describes.
- B
Most Wednesdays having readings doesn't mean most readings happen on Wednesdays. Suppose Zack's schedules readings every Monday and Tuesday as well. Those readings could outnumber the Wednesday readings while everything in the passage remained true. B changes which group we're counting.
- C
We know a scheduled reading brings the discount. We don't know that nearly every discounted day has a reading. Zack's could offer half-priced coffee on many additional days for some other promotion. C tries to use the discount to establish a reading, which the rule doesn't permit.
- DCorrect
The free readings guarantee discounted coffee on almost every Wednesday, so certainly on most Wednesdays. The discount could also apply on the remaining Wednesdays for another reason. That's why “most if not all” fits: most are covered by what we know, and all remains possible.
- E
A Wednesday without a free reading doesn't have to lack the discount. Perhaps Zack's schedules a paid poetry reading on that day. The rule gives discounted coffee whenever a poetry reading is scheduled, not only when the reading is free. Or there could be another promotion. We cannot establish that any Wednesday lacks half-priced coffee.
