Any sale item that is purchased can be(30 more words not shown)

If the statements above are(10 more words not shown)

Reading the argument

You can return the purchase, but you can't get your money back. Those are different things. Store credit means you can use the value toward another purchase at that store; a refund would give you the purchase price back.

The policy applies to every sale item. The next sentence tells us which items are on sale: all home appliances, all gardening equipment, and selected construction tools. We can connect those facts directly. Buy any gardening item, for example, and it falls under the sale policy: store credit is available, but a refund isn't.

What we’re looking for

The question asks what must be true. I'd expect an answer applying that return policy to one of the listed groups. We have enough information to do that without inventing the rest of the store's policy. In particular, being told what happens to sale items doesn't tell us what happens to everything else.

Working the answers

  • A

We haven't established that any item is refundable. For all we know, the store never offers refunds. Also, an item outside those two categories could still be on sale; selected construction tools are on sale too. Excluding appliances and gardening equipment doesn't get an item out of the sale policy. A invents a broad refund entitlement that the passage doesn't give us.

  • B

The policy guarantees store credit for sale items. It doesn't say sale items are the only purchases that get store credit. The store could offer that option for everything it sells, including full-price items. B rules out an option the passage leaves open.

  • C

The selected construction tools on sale qualify for store credit. What about any other construction tools? We aren't told, and those could qualify too. It is possible that every construction tool can be returned for store credit. C requires at least one exception, and we have no evidence of one.

  • D
    Correct

Every piece of gardening equipment is on sale, and no purchased sale item can be returned for a refund. Put those rules together: no gardening equipment is returnable for a refund. This is exactly the kind of direct application we were looking for. Store credit remains available; D only denies a refund.

  • E

We know the construction tools that are on sale aren't refundable. We don't know that every construction tool is on sale or that any other tools are barred from refunds. A full-price construction tool might be refundable without violating either statement. E extends the refund restriction beyond the tools covered by the stated policy.
